- despair
- The devastating belief that all hope for God's help and salvation is lost.
- temptation
- The word, will, or desire which is against God and used by the devil, the world, or our flesh to entrap and ensnare us in sin and unbelief.
- Satan (or the Evil One)
- The head of the fallen angels. He rebelled against God and wants to be God himself. He is a liar and murderer from the beginning of creation and opposes all that is good. He is anti-God and anti-Christ, the ruler, or prince, of this world, and the enemy of the church. He desires to bring to ruin the faith of every Christian and to drive people away from the true God in any way that he can. Genesis 3:15 predicts his defeat.
- valley of sorrow (or vale of tears)
- The term used in the catechism to describe the fact that this life is full of suffering because of the curse of the Fall and the evil of the devil, the world, and our sinful flesh.
- amen
- That word of faith which declares, "I believe that word which was prayed, preached, or spoken. Let it be done as God has promised."
- The Gloria Patri
- The ancient hymn of praise to the Holy Trinity: "Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen." It is the trinitarian doxology which often concludes the praying of a psalm.
- The Benedictus
- The New Testament song of Zachariah at the birth of John the Baptist, which is often sung at Matins. Its Latin title means "blessed" and is taken from the first line of the canticle, "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for He has visited and redeemed His people” (Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary p. 113).
- The Magnificat
- The New Testament song of Mary at the visitation of Elizabeth while she carried the unborn Christ in her womb. It is usually sung at Vespers as the song of all faithful believers who have received God's Word. Its Latin title means "it magnifies" and is from the first line of the canticle, "My soul magnifies the Lord: and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior” (Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, p. 123).
- The Nunc Dimittis
- The New Testament song of Simeon at the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple. Its Latin title means "now you dismiss" and is taken from the first line of the canticle, “Lord, now You let your servant depart in peace: according to Your Word, For my eyes have seen your salvation" (Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, p. 124). It is sung as one of the canticles in Vespers, the chief canticle in Compline, and as a Post-Communion Canticle in the Divine Service.
- The Venite
- The Latin title for the canticle (Psalm 95:1-7b) from Matins which means "come" and begins the psalm, "O come, let us sing to the Lord" (Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, p. 111).
- The Te Deum Laudamus
- The Latin title for the ancient canticle, usually sung at Matins, which begins with the words "We praise you, O God, we acknowledge you to be the Lord” (Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, p. 114).
