regeneration
To be brought back to "spiritual life" by the Holy Spirit, to faith in Christ, through the waters of Holy Baptism. [161]
new birth (or born again)
Common New Testament synonyms for Baptism as the work of God through which He gives new life in Christ. To be "born of water and the Spirit" (John 3:5), "not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:13). [162]
means of grace
The "vehicles" or "channels" through which the Holy Spirit gives Christ to us with all His gifts of grace. [163]
sacraments
"The mysteries of God" (1 Corinthians 4:1), or means of grace, instituted by Christ and used by the Spirit to deliver in concrete certainty God's forgiveness and salvation to sinners. Through these means, Holy Baptism, Holy Absolution, and the Holy Supper, the Holy Spirit conveys, offers, seals, and bestows all the saving treasures of the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ as "the words and promises of God declare." [164]
catechesis
God's way of teaching to convert sinners to the new life of faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Teaching the Word of God and passing on the language of our holy faith, so that the baptized learn how to receive God's gifts in the Divine Service, how to pray, how to confess, and how to live where God has called them in the freedom of the forgiveness of sins, with faith in Christ and love to the neighbor. [165]
sponsors
Baptized Christians who confess the faith into which a catechumen is being baptized, in order that they may support the catechumen with their prayers and counsel from the Word of God. These faithful Christians give testimony to the Baptism of those they sponsor and support them throughout their catechesis. [166]
confirmation
A rite of the church which declares of a catechumen: "Here is a Christian - he has been baptized, confesses the faith, and is in communion with Christ and His church." This rite is usually accompanied by the prayer of the church and a blessing from the Word of God.
NOTE: Catechesis precedes the rite of confirmation for all who have been baptized but who, as yet, have not been admitted to the Lord's Table. Adult converts are catechized prior to, as well as after, Baptism. In these cases the Baptism of an adult always implies "confirmation" and results in full communicant membership in the church. [167]
