Vocabulary for Lesson 1 (Quiz 1a.2)
Write each word in the Vocabulary section of your notebook with room for a 2-3 line definition.
- fear
- The awe and reverence of the heart toward God.
The honor and respect that a child is to have for his father.
The terror of the heart caused by the demands of God's Law.
- worship
- The faith or desire to receive from God all the good things He gives in His Word and Sacraments,
and to return to Him all glory, honor, thanksgiving, and praise.
"The service and worship of the Gospel is to receive good things from God,
while the worship of the law is to offer and present our goods to God.
We cannot offer anything to God unless we have first been reconciled and reborn.
The greatest possible comfort comes from this doctrine that the highest worship in the Gospel
is the desire to receive forgiveness of sins, grace, and righteousness" (Apology of the Augsburg Confession, IV, 155:310).
- the name of God
- The words by which God tells us who He is and by which we call upon Him in trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.
- the Law
- What we are to do and not to do, the demands of God upon every person, and that which condemns and accuses every sinner.
Without this word of God we would have no knowledge of our sin or need for the Gospel of Christ.
- idolatry
- "Wrong faith," or trust in someone or something other than the true God.
