Vocabulary for Lesson 2 (Test/Quiz 1b)

- to honor
- To give respect, reverence, esteem, love, and obedience to those whom God has placed in authority over you.
- earthly authorities
- Those whom God has placed in positions of authority over us to rule and govern in the home and society,
to teach what is right and wrong,
and to punish evildoers and reward the good.
They include fathers, mothers, the government and its officials, teachers, police, etc.
- vocation (or calling)
- The position in life in which God has placed you, such as husband, wife, father, mother,
son, daughter, employer, employee, etc. It includes your life' work and the responsiblities
you have been given by God toward others.
- the three functions of the Law
- To "curb" the sinner from the gross outbreakes of sin;
to "mirror," reflect, or show the sinner that he is a sinner, that is, to crush, crucify, and kill the sinner;
to give the "rule" or "standard" ("guide") of what is good and holy in the sight of God.
- murder
- Hatred, anger, or grudge-bearing against a person.
Killing a human life not in self-defense, including abortion, euthanasia (or mercy killing), and unjust wars.
- the sanctity of life
- How God defines the worth of human life by the fact that it is created in His image,
so that He alone has the right to give it or take it away.
- the quality of life
- How modern man measures the worth of human life by how comfortable and happy people are.
- abortion
- Killing a child in the womb of its mother.
- euthanasia (or mercy killing)
- Killing a person under the rationale that you are ending his suffering, putting him out of his misery,
or speeding up his eventual death, because his "quality of life" is no longer worth living.
- capital punishment
- When the government puts to death criminals for the crimes that they commit, such as murder and rape.
- just war
- When a nation goes to war to defend itself and its citizens against foreign aggression.
- neighbor
- Anyone in need whom God has "placed in your path," whether he is a friend or an enemy, a believer or an unbeliever.
- adultery
- Giving the physical, emotional, and spiritual devotion that rightly belongs to your spouse to someone else;
breaking the marriage vows of lifelong faithfulness;
having voluntary sexual relations with someone who is not your spouse; or entertaining such thoughts.
- fornication
- Seeking sexual gratification outside of marriage with others or alone.
- homosexuality
- Seeking the gratification of sexual desires for a person of one's own sex,
since such desires are sinful and contrary to God's design.
- sexuality
- The gift of being either male or female for the expression of love in marriage, and when it is God's will,
for the procreation of children.
- chaste
- To be pure, faithful, modest, disciplined, and chastened in your sexual thoughts, words, and deeds toward others.
- marriage
- The institution established by God for the union of a man and a woman in one flesh,
the procreation of children, and the help and comfort given and received by each of them in prosperity and adversity.
In this institution the man and the woman are to love, honor, and be faithful to each other until death parts them.
It is entered into by the public exchange of promises.
- one flesh
- The union created between a man and a woman through sexual intercourse.
In this union fidelity is called for in the marriage vows and required by the nature of the union itself.
- fidelity
- To be faithful to your marriage vows, or any promises that you make.
- stealing
- Taking for yourself what God has not given or provided, withholding support from those in need,
and failing to take care of your responsibiliies with the gifts God has given you,
such as paying taxes, supporting charities, and helping your neighbor in need.
- property
- All the material gifts which God has given you over which He has appointed you a steward.
- stewardship
- The use of all that you are and have in service to God and your neighbor.
- false testimony (or false witness)
- To lie in any way, to withhold the truth or remain silent when our neighbor's good name is being attacked,
to use the truth for the purpose of injuring our neighbor,
to pass judgment against our neighbor when we have not been appointed to do so.
- gossip
- The spreading of information about someone, whether true or false, that a person has no God-given right to speak about.
It includes the telling of rumors or hearsay, idle talk, and tattling about someone.
- slander
- A malicious statement that is intended to hurt someone's good name or reputation.
It includes the failure to defend a neighbor from the attacks of others by not "putting the best construction on everything"
he has done, or by not "explaining his actions in the kindest way."
- good name
- A person's standing or reputation in the eyes of other people.
- the law of love/the great commandments
- The summary of the Law's demand upon us in relation to God and your neighbor:
"'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength,
and with all your mind,' and 'your neighbor as yourself'" (Luke 10:27).
